I hope this letter finds you well.
I write you with so much apprehension and hesitation. I am apprehensive because what i have to say might be misconstrued and i hesitate because it would definitely echo in eternity.
I recently had the opportunity to watch the preview of a film depicting the life and times of the renowned potter, Ladi Kwali. As someone who deeply respects and admires Ladi Kwali’s contributions to the Gbagyi art and culture, I was eagerly anticipating a production that would truly capture her essence and legacy. However, I must express my disappointment in the way her story was presented.
Ladi Kwali was a pioneer, an artist whose work transcended borders and brought international recognition to Nigerian pottery. Her legacy deserves a portrayal that not only celebrates her extraordinary talent and contributions but also educates and inspires future generations. Unfortunately, the film did not meet these expectations.
Firstly, the narrative lacks depth and has failed to adequately convey the significance of Ladi Kwali’s work and her impact on both the local and international art scenes.
Her collaboration with Michael Cardew and the global acclaim she received were pivotal moments that should have been explored with more nuance and detail. Instead, the film glossed over these aspects, missing an opportunity to highlight her role as a bridge between traditional African pottery and contemporary ceramics.
Moreover, the production quality falls short of what is expected in a biographical film of this caliber. The cinematography, set design, and costume choices does not reflect the historical and cultural richness of Ladi Kwali’s time. An international standard of production would not only have honored her memory appropriately but also ensured that her story reached and resonated with a global audience.
To truly immortalize Ladi Kwali, I urge you to consider a more thorough and respectful approach to her story. Engage with historians, art scholars, and the communities that were directly influenced by her work. Invest in higher production values that can do justice to her legacy. A documentary-style film or a series with in-depth interviews and archival footage might also be a more fitting tribute. In other words, TAKE YOUR TIME, to bring out something worthwhile.
Ladi Kwali’s story is one of inspiration, resilience, and artistic brilliance. It deserves to be told with the utmost care and respect, reflecting the international significance of her contributions. I hope you will take these considerations to heart and strive to produce a work that truly honors her legacy.
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to seeing future projects that appropriately celebrate Gbagyi cultural Renaissance icons.
Yours angrily
